Shaoshan City (sháo shān shì 韶山市) is located at the hilly land in central Hunan Province (hú nán shěng 湖南省), neighboring upon the Chansha (cháng shā 长沙) – Zhuzhou (zhū zhōu 株洲) - Xiangtan (xiāng tán 湘潭) City Cluster. It enjoys excellent natural ecological environment. The subtropical monsoon moist climate with distinctinve four seasons and fresh air gives Shaoshan a good name of Natural Oxyen Bar (tiān rán yǎng bā 天然氧吧). It has 210 km2 land and 100,000 populations. Shaoshan City has been listed into the National Scenic and Historic Interest Area since 1994 and one of China’s first authorized “Excellent Tourism Cities”.

Shaoshan is most popularly known as the birthplace of Mao Zedong, the founder of the People's Republic of China. The tourist sites related to Chairman Mao has attracted many people, such as Mao Zedong’s Former Residence (máo zé dōng gù jū 毛泽东故居), Mao Zedong’s Private School (sī shú 私塾) site, and Memorial Hall of Mao Zedong (máo zé dōng jì niàn guǎn 毛泽东纪念馆), which reflect the life story and outstanding contributions of Mao Zedong (1893-1976).

The Memorial Hall of Mao Zedong boasts a collection of more than 10,000 pieces of historical materials, including cultural relics, documents and photos detailing the revolutionary stories of Mao Zedong. Among them, over 400 pieces belong to Class One collections. The exhibits include the bed Mao Zedong slept in his childhood, records of the Grand Historian and the Analects of Confucius once read, Mao Zedong’s diaries during the period of launching the peasant movement in Shaoshan, so on and so forth.

In addition of those historic sites, the natural scenery of Shaoshan is also attractive. There are Eight Scenes on Shaoshan (sháo shān bā jǐng 韶山八景), which are Green Pines on the Apex (sháo fēng sǒng cuì 韶峰耸翠), Morning or Evening Glow over Tower Mountain Range (tǎ lǐng qíng xiá 塔岭晴峡), Fairy Hut (xiān nǚ máo ān 仙女茅庵), Phoenix Kiosk Site (fèng yí ting zhǐ 凤仪亭址), Ancient Kermes Well (yān zhī gǔ jǐng 胭脂古井), Stone Wall Stream of Spring (shí bì liú quán 石壁流泉), Stone Gate (dùn shí chéng mén 顿石城门), and Stone House (shí wū qīng fēng 石屋清风). All of them are recorded in ancient books.

Tips:
1. The tourist sites such as Mao Zedong’s Former Residence and Memorial Hall is free in charge. And other natural sites need admission fee.
2. Transportation in Shaoshan is very convenient, for there are ring roads in Shaoshan to connect all the sites together. And there are buses and trains can take you to the scenic site directly.
