Most of us would appreciate having a “Hollywood Smile” with bright, white teeth.  Many of us have habits, however, that lead to stained teeth, including smoking and drinking coffee, tea, colas, and red wine.  As we age, our teeth become darker due to years of exposure to staining substances.  Poor dental hygiene can also contribute to staining; remember that you should brush your teeth for two full minutes twice a day, floss teeth once per day, and have a professional teeth cleaning every six months.

The good news is that the American Dental Hygienists’ Association reports that over 95% of external stains on your teeth can be lightened.  Professional tooth bleaching typically lasts for 5 years, depending on your habits.  Note that staining to the teeth can also be caused by tetracycline or over-exposure to fluoride; these stains are inside the tooth and are typically gray or dull gray-brown in color.  While they can be helped slightly by bleaching, the results are less dramatic.  Also note that if you have any tooth-colored fillings, the color of these will not change with bleaching.  Your dentist can help you determine whether or not bleaching is right for you.

The method most people consider first is using a tooth whitening toothpaste.  While this method is the cheapest and easiest, it is also the least effective. Tooth whitening toothpaste is readily available in Shanghai, and is just slightly more expensive than regular toothpaste.  Unlike bleaching, tooth whitening toothpaste does not actually whiten the teeth, but instead, can help to remove or prevent stains from appearing on the surface of the teeth.  Tooth whitening toothpaste can not dramatically change the color of your teeth, but it can help slow staining from ongoing exposure to staining beverages and foods.

Another option is purchasing an over-the-counter tooth bleaching system.  These kits can be purchased online or in many Western countries and offer an in-home bleaching alternative.  Because the kits offer an imprecise fit to the teeth, and are done without medical supervision, the active ingredients are less powerful than those you can get from your dentist.  Acceptable results can take longer to achieve and may require repurchase of additional kits.

Bleaching offered by your dentist can be both safer and more effective.  The dentist will make a professional impression of your teeth, and will create custom bleaching trays that fit precisely over your teeth.  Because of this professional fit, there is less chance of irritation to the gums and soft tissues to the mouth.  All of the active ingredients are directed to the surfaces of your teeth for fast, effective bleaching.  The trays are so thin that you can go about your normal daily activities and can even talk normally (although many people choose just to wear them overnight).  Your dentist will help determine your bleaching schedule (from several hours per day to overnight, from two to six weeks), depending on the sensitivity of your teeth and the type and severity of staining.

Tooth bleaching, when supervised by a dentist, is very safe.  Your teeth may be more sensitive to temperature during your treatment, but will return to normal once the treatment is finished.  The process is approved by the American Dental Association, and is an easy way to improve the look of your smile – and with brighter, whiter teeth, you may just find yourself smiling more often!
