China University of Geosciences
Colleges and Universities

China University of Geosciences (Beijing) is a comprehensive and National key university balanced developed in sciences, technology, arts, management, economics and laws, as well as maintaining its characteristic in geology, resources, environment and geological engineering. As one of the first 33 universities mandated to establish graduate school, China University of Geosciences was accepted by 211 Project, the national campus-constructing project. In 1952, China University of Geosciences was established by amalgamating geological departments of Peking University, Tsinghua University, Tianjing University, and Tangshan Railway Institute.

During the Culture Revolution, the campus had to relocate in Wuhan and went on existing there until the year 1978, when Deng Xiaoping authorized it to return to Beijing. In 1987, under the permission of the Education Ministry it was decided to have two independent education units in Beijing and Wuhan, called China University of Geosciences (Beijing) and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) respectively, both of which have independent legal personalities.

The university has attracted and retained many outstanding scholars and a group of specialists in geology, with whom the university could bring up abundant excellent graduates with grand morality and sound professional knowledge. All of their efforts have made great contribution to the course of Socialization constructing. Hence, the university has become the cradle for educating people engaged in geology as well as the base for geology research and study. At present, China University of Geosciences has gained a reputation as academy for geology.

During the 50 years’ practice, China University of Geosciences has developed a glorious motto as “Work Hard, Keep Modest, Flexibly Unit, and Pursue Progress”, attempting to be the leader in China’s geology education. Among the over 70, 000 graduates from China University of Geosciences in the past 50 years, 21 have become members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and more than 200 have been rewarded as Model Workers by provinces or ministries, especially in March, 2003, their alumnus Wen Jiabao was inaugurated as the sixth Premier of China.

The university  became the Chinese Government Scholarship universities with the authorization of the Ministry of Education of China in March 2006. It can accept international students who get the Chinese Government Scholarship.
