Explore new opportunities on a different scale
Working as an IELTS Examiner for the British Council in China gives you the chance to explore far more than your skills and abilities. With flexible contracts that are renewable based on performance, we offer you the scope and opportunity to discover every aspect of Chinese culture, while assessing spoken English skills.
Your role
Based at one of our British Council offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou or Chongqing, you’ll travel to a variety of locations across China to assess candidates in their use of English. This can involve long-distance journeys and extended stays away from your base, so we’ll give you plenty of help with travel arrangements, hotel bookings and support if you get delayed. You’ll also be able to plan your own downtime, so you can explore China around each assignment.
What we offer
We aim to be a supportive employer, which is why we are offering a unique contract that involves working at least six days a month, with extensive opportunities to boost your income by working additional days each month. This flexible approach puts you in control, enabling you to decide when to add to your earnings and when to feed your sense of adventure - to this end, we also offer learning support so that you can learn Chinese. We also provide opportunities for career progression.
What you will need
With a recognized TESOL or CELTA qualification, or equivalent, and at least three-year experience of teaching English to adults (over 16-year-old) , you’ll need a flexible approach and the ability to work on your own initiative.
Please note that current government policy in China requires applicants for work permits for this position to provide proof of at least two years of teaching experience. This proof needs to be in the form of a signed and stamped letter provided by the school(s) you have worked at, covering at least two of the years you have taught English.
About salary
The salary for this role consists of the 'core day' salary and 'top-up' salary, for which the majority comes from the latter part. It depends on your own capacity and the more availability you provided, the more opportunities you will get for work.
You will enjoy the flexibility to work and chances to travel around China with travel expenses covered, including high-way, flight and hotel, etc. Due to the current coronavirus situation in China, we are making all of our efforts to make a safe working environment for all the staffs.
Special Note
Please be aware that we have recently been informed by our partners of a new policy related to training new examiners in the Writing module of the IELTS test. Anyone who accepts an offer to become a full-time examiner in China will now initially be offered a ‘speaking-only’ contract, and will only be trained to deliver exams in the Speaking module of the IELTS test. Those examiners may be trained as Writing examiners at a future date, but this is not guaranteed.
